How to start investing in Mexico from scratch (with little money)

The investment myth

"Investing is for rich people."

Why invest if I can just save?

Saving is necessary. Investing is different.

Saving: Putting money aside to use later. No growth (or minimal growth).

Investing: Putting your money to work for you. Your money generates more money.

The problem with pure saving: inflation. If you have $10,000 under the mattress, in 10 years that $10,000 will buy what you can buy today with $6,000. Your money lost value without you touching it.

Investing protects you from this.

My recommendation for 90% of people

Step 1: Open a high-yield savings account or money market account for your emergency fund.

Step 2: Once emergency fund is complete, open a brokerage account (Fidelity, Vanguard, or Schwab).

Step 3: Buy a low-cost S&P 500 index fund (VOO, VTI, or FXAIX).

Step 4: Automate. Set up a monthly automatic contribution. Don't think about it. Let time do its work.

The power of compound interest

If you invest $200/month starting at age 25 with an 8% annual return, at age 65 you'll have $700,000.

If you start at 35 (just 10 years later), you'll have $300,000.

The 10-year difference: $400,000.

Time is the most valuable asset you have. Don't waste it.
